Information Ministry Holds Quiz Competition Among 4 Schools
On May 26th, 2025, Moyamba District buzzed with intellectual fervor, as the Ministry of Information and Civic Education launched a two-day civic engagement event, part of its ongoing Civic Day Series. The initiative, designed to deepen civic awareness and bridge the gap between government and citizens, commenced with a dynamic quiz and debate competition that captivated students and community members alike. Four prominent local schools – St. Joseph’s Vocational School, Harford School for Girls, Kulafai Rashideen Islamic Secondary School, and St. Michael’s Junior Secondary School – showcased their civic knowledge and critical thinking in both challenging arenas.
The quiz segment rigorously tested participants on the rich history of Moyamba District and broader national civic and governance issues. Following three intense rounds, Melvina Musa from Harford School for Girls, distinguished herself, claiming victory with an impressive score of 37 points. Rashid Tiffer of St. Michael’s Junior Secondary School, secured the runner-up position with 23 points, demonstrating commendable understanding.
The debate competition proved equally compelling, with the four schools engaging in spirited discussions on thought-provoking topics. Initial debates centered on “The Importance of Free Education” and “Should Mobile Phones Be Allowed in Schools?” From these preliminary rounds, St. Michael’s Junior Secondary School and St. Joseph’s Vocational School emerged as the two formidable finalists. The culminating debate saw Kelfala Samura of St. Michael’s and Ashmaru Deen of St. Joseph’s articulate their positions with persuasive arguments on the crucial topic of “The Significance of Paying Tax.” After a compelling exchange that highlighted their intellectual prowess, Kelfala Samura was ultimately declared the winner, a testament to his eloquence and reasoning.
In recognition of their exceptional performance and active participation, the Ministry honored the winners and runners-up with customized cash prizes and academic materials, all prominently branded with the Ministry’s insignia. This tangible encouragement underscored the Ministry’s dedication to nurturing young minds. The Civic Day Series is set to continue with a high-level Town Hall Meeting, scheduled for tomorrow. This crucial gathering will provide a direct platform for Ministers, Members of Parliament, and heads of government agencies to engage with the people of Moyamba District on vital matters of governance, service delivery, and civic participation, further solidifying the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to fostering civic consciousness and empowering citizens, particularly the youths, through education and direct engagement.
