Under the proactive leadership of Director General, YankubaAskia Bio, the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbour Authority has marked a significant upsurge in its operational metrics and strategic developments. In a recent report, the authority disclosed a noteworthy increase in vessel traffic, rising from 426 in 2022 to 434 in 2023. This surge in maritime activity is indicative of the burgeoning trade and economic activities within the region.
Import metrics have surged as well, showcasing a commendable 9% increase in import volumes. In 2023, a staggering 68,000 metric tons of goods were imported through the port, reflecting a substantial leap from the previous year’s 61,000 metric tons. This boost underscores the port’s growing importance as a pivotal hub for trade and commerce.
In a praiseworthy move towards socioeconomic empowerment, Director General YankubaAskia Bio announced the recruitment of 200 new employees, all earning above the minimum wage threshold. This initiative aligns seamlessly with President Bio’s empowerment agenda, bolstering livelihoods and fostering economic inclusivity within the workforce.
To enhance operational efficiency and embrace digital innovation, the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbour Authority is currently undergoing a transformative shift from traditional paper-based systems to streamlined electronic processes. This transition is supported by a generous €64,000 in funding from key partners, ensuring a seamless integration of technology into port operations.
Further exemplifying its commitment to growth and progress, the authority has forged strategic partnerships with prominent entities such as Arise IIP for dry port development and Gento Group for the establishment of a transhipment port. These collaborations are poised to fortify the port’s infrastructure and amplify its role as a vital conduit for regional trade and connectivity.
