Police Declares Bassiru Conteh Wanted  

Reports reaching this medium reveal that a popular youth leader of the main opposition party APC, Bassiru Conteh, residing at Mayenkineh Road, Calaba Town, eastern Freetown, narrowly escaped death at the hands of ruling party youths and security forces, during an attack on his residence on 10th August 2022, and has been declared wanted by the police.

According to sources, Bassiru Conteh has been targeted for his affiliation with the main opposition party APC. At Calaba Town, there are two ataya bases, one belonging to the ruling party and the other to the main opposition party, and there has always been tension between them.

Thus, on August 10, ruling party youths accompanied by security forces, stormed residents of known opposition party members. Bassiru Conteh was prominent among those they were looking for. The government accused the APC of being behind the riot that resulted in the deaths of 6 police officers and some 30 civilians.

During the curfew that was declared in the afternoon of that day, security forces stormed houses of opposition party members and sympathizers, shooting dead several of them and also taking their corpses away.

Family members explained that when the security forces and the ruling party youths stormed the residence of Bassiru, he managed to escape via the backdoor of his house into the nearby bush leading further up the hill, in hot pursuit by gun-touting youths and armed officers, firing indiscriminately up the hill.

However, family members and residents in the area say that since that day, Bassiru Conteh has not been seen, with family members saying that his whereabouts are unknown. They furthered that they have been under constant harassment from ruling party youths and security forces.

Police sources say that Bassiru Conteh and others have been declared wanted and bounty put on their heads.

As we go to press, there is still no information about the whereabouts of Bassiru Conteh.
