Mariama Jalloh Escapes With Umu Hawa Jalloh

Reports from Beach Road, Lumley in Western Urban area reveal that one Mariama Jalloh of 4 Beach Road, has abscond with her daughter, Umu Hawa Jalloh, a secondary school going pupil, after threats from her husband, Lamrana Jalloh to give their daughter’s hand in marriage to an elderly man.

According to family sources, the husband, Lamrana Jalloh, returned from Guinea and engaged his wife that his family in Guinea have found a man for their daughter, a decision that Mariama rejected outrightly on the grounds that Umu Hawa Jalloh was too young to be married off to a man and that she was still in school. Undeterred by the rejection of his wife, Lamrana and his family in Guinea went about fixing a date for the marriage. It was further disclosed that as the date drew close and plans to take the little girl away for the marriage, Mariama Jalloh is said to have taken her daughter and absconded from the house to an unknown destination.

Angered by his wife’s defiant, Lamrana Jalloh and his family members are said to have mounted a man-hunt for both Mariama and Umu Hawa Jalloh. Youths were mobilized to look for the duo, but to no avail.

Lamrana Jalloh is said to have intimated that it is their tradition to marry their girl child at a tender age, thereby prevent her from engaging in premarital sex. Family sources maintained that the Fullah tradition view girls as a means of getting wealth by marrying them early to older men, also that the place of the girl child is the kitchen and farm, not education, which is seen as the place for the male child, who should eventually take a wife and breed a family, thereby furthering the family name.
