Sheka Sesay & Niece Escape From Mob Justice At Hands Of Angry Youths
By: Ahmed Y. Turay
Twenty-Two (22) years old, Sheka Sesay, alleged to be travelling from a village off the Masiaka-Bo Highway, was involved in a road accident with his commercial motor bike at the Mathurr village on the Masiaka-Bo Highway, while trying to escape with his niece, Musu Sankoh, that was being forced into early marriage to a fifty (50), years old man at a village called Maffalah in Yoni Chiefdom, Tonkolili District, Northern Sierra Leone, on 3rd August 2022.
Reports say that shortly after the accident, Sheka tried to look at the state of the victim and possibly take him to the nearest hospital, and in the prevailing situation, he was chased by a group of angry youths with sticks, stones and machetes. He is said to have then boarded the bike with his niece (his elder sister’s daughter) and hurriedly left the scene, pursued by the angry youths. It was disclosed that the common practice in that local community is that those responsible for causing road accidents that result in deaths are often attacked by angry youths in the community, often using sticks stones and machetes as a way of revenge for the deceased.
Thus, after the said accident, Sheka Sesay decided to escape being lynched, and took off with his niece on his bike. It was revealed that since he had escaped, family members of the victim, in the company of the angry youths, stormed the family house of Sheka Sesay in a village called Masherry, a remote village off the Masiaka-Bo highway, burning it to the ground, and eventually chasing his entire family out of the village, threatening to kill him when seen.
It was further disclosed that as Sheka had disappeared and his whereabouts unknown, the incident was reported to the Mile 91 Police Station, and a warrant for his arrest has been issued. Moves by this medium to get further information from family members of Sheka Sesay proved futile, as the entire family is said to have gone into hiding from the angry youths who threatened to kill them and Sheka, in revenge for the victim.
As we go to press, the whereabouts of Sheka Sesay and his niece, Musu Sankoh, are unknown, and the police have put out a warrant of arrest for them in all stations across the country.
