Abu Bakarr Sankoh is an astute Member in the youth wing of the main opposition party, All People’s Congress (APC), and a popular football coach. After the August 10 riot that killed 6 police officers and 30 civilians, members known supporters of the main opposition party became targets, as the President had laid the blame for the riot solely on the opposition, describing the protesters as terrorists on national radio.
This allegation, coming from the First Gentleman of the nation, gave his supporters the zeal to target APC members, resulting in storming of residences of known opposition party members during the curfew that was declared. The killing of a popular blogger of the main opposition party, Evangelist Samson, is one of such incidents.
As these youths went on the rampage, many opposition party members went into hiding, with others leaving the country. While recuperating in the hospital for few days, Abubakarr received a call from his mother, informing of a Police Warrant for his arrest. On getting this news, and the declaration by the President that all protesters of the August 10th protest, were terrorists, Mr. Hassan Kamara, volunteered to take him to an unknown location at a village in Koinadugu District, Kabala in the Northern province of Sierra Leone.
It was also disclosed that by the time information of his whereabouts in the district was known, Abubakarr had left the village, and the raid by the police on the village proved futile. Mr Hassan Kamara is said to have been tortured by the police, after they learnt that he had harbored him.
