Sierra Leone’s Progress Depends On A Focused Political Class

by Mahmud Tim Kargbo

Sierra Leone is a country that has long been plagued by political corruption and ineptitude by its two main political parties (SLPP and APC). Despite being rich in natural resources, the people of Sierra Leone continue to suffer from poverty, lack of basic services, and political instability. One of the main reasons for this ongoing struggle is the failure of SLPP and APC politicians to effectively serve and represent their people.

One of the key reasons why SLPP and APC politicians are failing their people is due to rampant corruption within government circle. In a country where poverty is widespread and resources are limited, corruption has become a major obstacle to development. The majority of SLPP and APC politicians often prioritise their own personal interests, or those of their political party, over the needs of the people they were elected to serve. This leads to embezzlement of public funds, mismanagement of resources, and a lack of transparency in government operations.

Another reason for the failure of SLPP and APC politicians is the lack of accountability and oversight. There is often little to no repercussions for politicians who engage in corrupt practices or fail to deliver on their promises. This lack of accountability has created a culture of impunity within the government, allowing SLPP and APC politicians to act with little regard for the well-being of their constituents.

Furthermore, most SLPP and APC politicians often lack the necessary skills and expertise to effectively govern. Many politicians are driven by personal ambition rather than a genuine desire to serve the people. This has led to a lack of vision and direction in government policies, resulting in ineffective decision-making and a failure to address the root causes of poverty and underdevelopment in the country.

In addition, SLPP and APC politicians have marred Sierra Leone’s political landscape with  tribalism and regionalism, which further divides the population and hinders progress. SLPP and APC politicians often use ethnicity and regional affiliations to further their own agendas, rather than working towards the common good of all Sierra Leoneans.

In order to address these issues and improve the lives of the people of Sierra Leone, it is imperative that SLPP and APC politicians prioritise the needs of the people over their own personal interests. They must demonstrate integrity, transparency, and accountability in their actions, and work towards building a more inclusive and equitable society. Only then can Sierra Leone move towards a brighter future for all of its citizens.
