Police Declares Adama Bangura & Family Wanted
According to reports from northern Sierra Leone, one Adama Bangura, believed to be a member of the notorious PPP group, and alleged to have been among the organizers of the August 10 protest that resulted in the death of some 25 civilians, shot dead by the security forces, and six police officers, who suffered mob justice in the hands of angry youths, has been declared wanted by the police.
According to police sources, Adama Bangura is said to have been in contact with people in the diaspora, believe to be members of the PPP group, and was among the planners of the said protest that turned violent. She and others are therefore wanted by the police for their involvement in the August 10 2022 protest in Freetown and its surrounding towns.
Adama Bangura has been identified as a strong member of the main opposition, All People’s Congress (APC) Party and is known to have strong views against the current government, especially on its governance system. The government accused the main opposition party of being behind the said protest.
However, the organizers of the protest, The People’s Power in Politics (PPP), has been very vocal against policies of the government and has been seen as the mouthpiece of the main opposition party living in the diaspora, with silent members in the country, and has grown into a strong force, with leadership in the diaspora.
The PPP, in recent months, has held protests, with some of them resulting in police arrests and loss of lives. One of the protagonists of this so-called revolutionary group is a Netherlands-based William Kamara, who is commonly known by many in Sierra Leone as ‘Adebayor’. Adebayor has gathered a lot of followers, who mostly listen to his anti-government voice notes sent through WhatsApp groups.
Police sources say that Adama Bangura, who is also a businesswoman involved in petty trading, is wanted in complicity with others because of her active participation in the PPP group and the previous protests it has held across the country. Her house was earmarked as the main meeting point for PPP members.
According to residents in the area, on the day of the protest and subsequent days, the police had raided Adama’s residence and arrested her two sons, and during protest by their sisters, they were shot at point blank range. It was also disclosed that neighboring houses were also raided by ruling party operatives in the company of armed security forces, and these had sent chilling message of their commitment to wipe out the entire family if seen.
One resident in the area, who spoke to this medium on basis of anonymity, explained that the angry youths stressed that Adama Bangura has a son named Alie Sesay that stays in the diaspora, who they alleged to have been the conduit between her and the members of the PPP in the diaspora, with some residing in the UK, Europe, USA etc. They also intimated that he should be brought to book. However, our source furthered that all the family and in Adama Bangura’s house have gone into hiding, including Adama, who was not at home when the police raided her house.
As we go to press the whereabouts of Adama Bangura and the rest of her family are yet unknown, and the police have declared them wanted and have appealed for information leading to the arrest of any of them.
